## Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ)

The temporomandibular joint is the central axis of all jaw movement. When the balance of the muscles, ligaments, and disc breaks down, pain, noise, and limited mouth opening appear.

### Stages of Progression

01

Pain

Pain appears in the TMJ, masseter, and temporalis muscle areas, and may lead to migraines or stiffness in the neck and shoulders.

Joint Noise

A simple joint sound such as a 'click' or 'pop', or a grating crepitus sound, can be heard.

Limited Mouth Opening

If the comfortable mouth opening is 40mm or less, it is judged to be limited mouth opening.

### Key Points

Medication & Physical Therapy

Medication is used for inflammatory disorders, while laser, infrared, and mid-frequency therapy reduce muscle spasm and pain.

Splint

It secures space in the TMJ to restore the jaw to its normal position.

Conservative & Prosthetic Treatment

When correction with a splint alone is difficult, conservative and prosthetic treatment is combined.
