AESTHETIC PROSTHESIS

What are aesthetic prosthetics?

A treatment that restores both function and a natural appearance by covering or filling damaged or discoloured teeth with tooth-coloured materials such as all-ceramic and zirconia.

  1. Prosthetics protect the toothA prosthetic treatment protects a tooth weakened by decay, fracture or root canal treatment by covering or filling it with an artificial material.
  2. Close to the natural toothAesthetic prosthetics additionally aim to match the colour, translucency and form closely to the natural tooth.
  3. Ceramic, without metalBecause ceramic-based materials are used without metal, there is less of the dark shadow appearing at the gum margin.

MATERIALS

Choosing the material

The material is decided according to the site, the amount of remaining tooth structure, the chewing force and whether bruxism is present. In some cases different materials are planned for the front teeth and the molars.

MaterialCharacteristics and use
All-ceramicWith excellent translucency and colour expression, it is used mainly in areas where aesthetics matter, such as the front teeth. Light transmits through it much as it does through a natural tooth.
ZirconiaIts high strength makes it suitable for molars and bridges that bear a strong chewing load. More recently, zirconia with increased translucency is also used for the front teeth.
Inlay / onlayA method in which only the damaged portion is filled with ceramic rather than covering the whole tooth. More of the healthy tooth structure can be preserved.

DIGITAL

The digital prosthetic workflow

At MEGAPLANT Dental Clinic Seodaemun, the restoration is designed on the basis of digital data from an intraoral scanner.

01

Intraoral scan

An intraoral scanner captures the tooth form as digital data.

02

Digital design

The restoration is designed on the basis of that data.

Machined in-house

The CEREC Primemill chairside milling unit in our in-house dental lab can machine inlays, onlays, crowns and bridges on site.

Shorter, adjusted on the spot

Where the conditions are suitable, we aim to shorten the fabrication period and adjust colour and form directly in the treatment room.

Where conditions are suitable

Zirconia requires a sintering process, so whether it can be completed on the same day varies from case to case.

PROCESS

Treatment process

1
Diagnosis and material consultation

We check the extent of tooth damage and the occlusion, and decide on the material and method.

2
Tooth preparation and scanning

The tooth is prepared by the amount of space the restoration requires, and the form is recorded by intraoral scan.

3
Design and fabrication

The digitally designed restoration is produced through in-house milling or a laboratory process.

4
Temporary restoration

Where a fabrication period is required, a temporary restoration protects the tooth.

5
Fitting and occlusal adjustment

After checking the colour and the bite, the restoration is bonded and the chewing sensation adjusted.

CARE

Care and maintenance

For long-lasting restorations

  • If plaque builds up at the margin between the restoration and the gum, gum inflammation or secondary decay may develop, so brushing and flossing are important.
  • Very hard foods such as ice and hard candy can cause ceramic to fracture.
  • If you grind your teeth, please ask us about a night guard.
  • At regular check-ups we examine the bond and the occlusion.
