TEETH WHITENING

TEETH WHITENING

What is teeth whitening?

A treatment in which a whitening agent breaks down the staining accumulated on and within the tooth surface, producing a shade lighter than the original. We check the condition of the gums and teeth before proceeding.

  1. Surface stainingFood, drinks and smoking stain the tooth surface.
  2. Internal changeThe dentine colour deepens with age.
  3. Breaking down pigmentsA peroxide-based whitening agent breaks down the pigments. It lightens the colour alone, without trimming or covering the tooth.

Tooth colour darkens through a combination of surface staining and internal change.

COMPARE

In-office whitening and at-home whitening

MEGAPLANT Dental Clinic Seodaemun plans the two methods either on their own or in combination, according to the cause of the staining and the condition of the teeth.

At-home whitening

  • WhereWorn at home over a set period
  • ConcentrationLower concentration
  • MethodWhitening agent placed in a custom-fitted tray
  • CharacterTakes longer but lightens gradually

In-office whitening

  • WhereAt the clinic
  • ConcentrationComparatively higher concentration
  • MethodGums protected, then the agent is applied and managed
  • CharacterThe clinical team monitors it and can address sensitivity or gum irritation immediately

※ At-home whitening is also used to maintain results after in-office whitening.

CHECK

What we check before the procedure

The same effect does not appear with every type of discolouration. Staining from coffee, tea and tobacco tends to respond comparatively well.

We check first

  • Whether there is decay, a cracked tooth or an exposed tooth root
  • Whether there is gum inflammation or tartar (if so, treatment and scaling come first)
  • Whether there is resin or a crown on the front teeth (restorations do not whiten)
  • Whether you usually experience marked sensitivity

When whitening alone may not be enough

  • After root canal treatmentA single tooth has darkened following root canal treatment
  • Drug-induced or congenitalThere is banded discolouration from medication or congenital causes

※ The response to whitening may be limited here, so we also review covering the colour with aesthetic resin or a no-prep veneer. Identifying the cause first is the way to reduce unnecessary procedures.

PROCESS

Treatment process

1
Examination and shade record

We record the current tooth shade and confirm whether whitening is possible.

2
Gum protection

A protective barrier is applied so the whitening agent does not contact the gums.

3
Application of the whitening agent

The whitening agent is applied to the tooth surface and left to act for a set time.

4
Review and maintenance guidance

We check the change in shade and, if needed, plan additional sessions or at-home whitening.

CARE

Sensitivity and precautions

Points to know before and after the procedure

  • Temporary sensitivity may occur during or immediately after whitening. In most cases it subsides over time, and if it is marked we adjust the concentration and duration of the whitening agent.
  • For a few days after the procedure, it is advisable to avoid strongly coloured foods such as coffee, tea, wine and kimchi stew, as well as smoking.
  • The whitening effect is not permanent and may gradually revert depending on dietary habits, so maintenance care is required.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a dental or gum condition, we adjust the timing of the procedure.

Teeth Whitening Consultation

We identify the cause of the staining and explain the change that can be expected, along with a suitable method and number of sessions.
